News Briefs: Desperate Housewives Is Killing a Major Character

DEATH ON WISTERIA LANE NEWS

... Rumor has it that a major character from ABC's Desperate Housewives is being killed off in a March episode! Will it be the older sexy lady or the sexy older lady? Or perhaps it will be that handsome older guy who caused trouble with one of the sexy older ladies? Place your bets in the comments! [EW]

DEVELOPMENT DEALS

... Ben Stiller will star, direct, and executive produce All Talk for HBO. The comedy, from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close author Jonathan Safran Foer, centers on a Jewish family in Washington, D.C. and is in discussions with Alan Alda to co-star. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox has ordered a pilot for the single-camera comedy Like Father, which was written by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Cougar Town). Not much is known about the project except that it's about a father-son relationship. [Deadline Hollywood]

... NBC went nutso with pilots today, ordering eight comedies. Okay, here we go; I'm only going to type this once, so read carefully. Single-camera comedy Friday Night Dinner comes from Greg Daniels (The Office) and follows a quirky family that has dinner every Friday night. Jimmy Fallon has an untitled multi-camera comedy in the works about a group of thirtysomething guys who are parents but haven't yet grown up. Multi-camera comedy Daddy's Girl follows a young woman who returns from overseas to find out her dad is dating the mean girl from her high school. Single-camera comedy Next Caller Please centers on a macho radio DJ and his new feminist co-host. Another untitled single-camera comedy is about a shy woman who plots revenge on her ex-boyfriend after he dumps her. Roseanne Barr's multi-camera comedy Downwardly Mobile, starring Barr as the matron of a trailer park, also got the nod. Single-camera comedy Go On features a sportscaster who finds help in group therapy sessions. Single-camera comedy Animal Kingdom follows a vet who loves the animals he cares for but hates their owners. Of all those, only Animal Kingdom sounds like something I'd watch. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The CW couldn't keep up with NBC and only ordered one pilot. First Cut is a lighthearted medical drama about a woman who becomes a doctor and learns that the professional world can be just as dismal as her pathetic high school life. Possible pairing with Hart of Dixie? [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... To everyone who's read The Walking Dead comics, there are no spoilers ahead. Everyone else, beware. Jon Bernthal, who plays Shane in the AMC adaptation of the comics, is eyeing a starring role in TNT's L.A. Noir. The series is from Frank Darabont, who was famously ousted from showrunning duties at The Walking Dead. Perhaps spoiling a character death by way of casting interest is his way of getting a little revenge? [Indiewire]

... Tia Carrere, who just joined Celebrity Apprentice, will guest-star on In Plain Sight. She'll develop a romance with Stan as his dance instructor. Look for her on March 23. Remember when she was the hottest thing ever in Wayne's World? [TV Guide]

... Also coming to In Plain Sight is former Twin Peaks hottie Madchen Amick. She'll play WITSEC's second in command. This begs the question: Who would you rather? Madchen Amick or Tia Carrere? Tough call, but I give the edge to Madchen since she was Twin Peak's Shelly Johnson. [EW]

... Pushing Daisies' Kristin Chenoweth will gust-star on Hot in Cleveland. She'll play a friend of the ladies from Hollywood who just broke up with her famous dermatologist boyfriend. [TV Guide]

... Paula Malcomson has landed the female lead in Showtime's Ray Donovan opposite Live Schreiber. The series follows a "fixer" who helps Hollywood's elite. Malcomson starred on Deadwood, Caprica, Sons of Anarchy, and regrettably, The Event. But we'll forgive her for that last one. [Deadline Hollywood]

I can't wait to find out who gets knocked off!

  • non1984

i think it will be Mike Delfino that will be killed off.

  • byronsdrom

I say kill them all and be done with it in a fashionable manner. The last season, anything goes.

I hope its Andrew that they kill off in Desperate Housewives or Bree.

  • orc8

They are only in their 30s and 40s and yet you call them "older"? They are older then the teens and 20-somethings on CW, but the fact you would call them older means we need more shows like DH to balance out the age range.

  • memizz

Desperate Housewives: If they're killing off someone I hope it's Renee. She's not really that important. And the four major characters have been there through it all and I don't want any of them to die that's hella not fair. But if one of the four had to die I think it should be Bree. Just saying...

Love him or hate him, Shane is the most interesting character on TWD. Why would anyone want to lose the most interesting character??

  • Mate

Roseanne Barr!?!?!? What the hell is wrong with NBC? None of those sound worth while and none sound like they can do what Community did/does. #sixseasonsandamovie.

And if I were Jon Bernthal I would run not walk away from The Walking Dead based on the first half of this season. And if he leaves my viewership might go with him. Aside from Glen and Maggie and Daryl. Shane is the only character I actually like. Without him or if they recast him, there really isn't much else to enjoy.

    However LA. Noir sounds great.

  • AngelaBeith

is it just me, or does kristin chenoweth look like someone who was raised in a wind tunnel?

  • torque_smacky

You can't tell how good or bad a comedy will be based on its premise alone (except for "dads who never grew up," please stop it).

Dramas are the opposite, since all the potential FOR drama is in the premise. And it's been a long time since I got excited for an upcoming drama on network TV. They all come from the same doctor-lawyer-cop mold these days.

  • FabienneDevil

Hope Gabrielle won' t get killed as well as all the rest of the " Desperate Housewives " in the forthcoming episodes :( Yet, I am wondering who could die. The behaviour of Bree has tended to become suicidal for a while by drinking & sleeping with many lovers but there completely are strangers. In my opinion, Susan doesn' t deserve to get killed in any way unlike what I read. Susan she might be clumpsy ( nobody is perfect or flawless ! ) but she remains sensitive, needless to add that she has children, " mj " still is very young & needs his mother. Now, wait & see for the storyline for each character. Then, one Desperate Husband could die either.

  • TV-World

Let's hope Susan is the one. It wouldn't make sense right now but still...she's the worst housewive :P

As long as it's not Gaby I'm okay with anybody getting killed -.-

You have got to be kidding. For all that has happened to Gaby - loss of baby, loss of biological child, being molested, etc. - She is the worst, un-redeemable character going. The way she is written as being so self-centered and selfish with no thought for anyone, but herself, makes you care less those things happened to her. She has never grown as a character from those experiences. It's sad, actually.

You could almost say the same for all the characters, but Susan, at least, has been the best personality on the show. It's unfortunate she has not been that well written either.

It's what's wrong with the whole show. They throw experiences with guest characters at the housewives just to do so for a story, which are then seemingly dismissed afterwards with no real character development progressing from them.moreless

  • Carolinapereira

i hope it's bree. she has no interesting storyline lately

  • fweak

All Talk will be great if they can snag Alan Alda! Very skeptical about Like Father. Friday Night Dinner is great in the UK and should work well here.

  • jaden84

All those sitcoms NBC ordered how much you want to bet every single last one of them will be cancelled after two episodes. Well maybe the Jimmy Fallon one will probably survive.

I should be more careful when you warn of possible spoilers. Shane is the most interesting, unpredictable character on the show...it will be so boring without him! Who else would shoot a friend in the leg to escape a group of ravenous zombies?

  • TrevPlatt

Tia Carrere in Wayne's World - good times.

Of the two, I'd have to say Mdchen Amick.

You spelt Liev (Schreiber) wrong btw !

  • mac94102

For the NBC pilots, I would be interested in watching Friday Night Dinner and Next Caller Please.

  • Mike_Schmidt

Actually, I see the below comment in light of the above article about Desperate Housewives - there seems there is the same sense of desperation about the DH and The Walking Dead - how about the producers marrying the two concepts... if they could only go a little further and let loose a horde of Zombies on the girls and those that survive could join the survivors from TWD - that way one could save on production costs, spice things up, economise on viewing time and introduce a few new plot points... (pun on the "plot" thingy and as for whether the DH join TWD in an alive state and what for... we won't go there...)

  • AnoukvdZee

Spoiler for those who've skipped over the Walking Dead part! - I am so glad Shane will be gone, I've very seldom hated a character more in my life. And not in a good way. Yeay!! This just made my day ;)

  • Janter23

Man, it's like NBC is trying to be the major network version of Comedy Central. Hopefully, not all of these shows will air next year.

  • CurlyMC

Madchen wins that battle hands down.

  • estella87

Doesn't NBC realize the whole quantity vs quality concept?

  • Bottron

NBC is where pilots go to die. I doubt we'll ever see any of those mind numbingly boring shows, but instead of trying all these bad shows, they should bring back Community and promise us a 4th season.

  • Akyriel

So, someone thought of the show, "Becker", and thought to replace people with animals?

  • Nat6386

i think it will be mike follwoing the desperate housewives plot and storyline, it looks as though the mob will kill him.

Well, It can't be one of the ladies. It has got to be a Husband. They can't kill be Tom off. that would be cruel. If Mike died, Susan would be a mess...My money would be on Carlos. Hmm

  • WillYouKindly

I haven't watched Desperate Housewives in a few years, but I'm betting on the red-headed older lady. The one who pretty much murdered her husband in season one.

  • Arch_Angel88

NBC is DESPERATE! It seems in lieu of giving actual quality shows a chance, they've decided to use the old "throw as much crap as you can at the wall, and see what sticks" technique (admittedly a TV classic).

I thought Shane was going to reach his timely demise by the end of the season even before I read this recent news (and no, I have not read the comics). I'm not sure if I predicted this due to any actual insight, or just because I've come to hate him so much, either way, I'm now looking forward to his *hopefully* gruesome death. And if they would kill off Andrea as well, then my Walking Dead "pray for death" list will only have one more name on it (I wonder if any of you could guess who it is?).moreless

Lori is almost to obvious .. is it Dale ?

    • BriannaKirkla

I actually love the way Shane is turning out! I've read all the comics, and I love they way that the show is not following the books exactly. I hope they keep Shane around, to see how the story will be different having him around in upcoming situations. They've already shown us that nobody is safe, just because they live in the comics. Sophia is still around to this day in the comics' world, so maybe Shane could end up sticking around longer. The thing that makes the story so great in the comics is to see the characters' progressions as living in this world of death changes them into another person. I think that Shane's character in the show is actually more similar to where Rick's character ends up going in the books. Everyone who is a fan of the show should do themselves a favor and get into the comics. It's seriously some of the best storytelling ever written!moreless

    • Mate

See that is weird because I only really like Shane and Glen and to a lesser extent Daryl. The rest in my opinion can be munched on. Rick had so much promise in the first episode but has become too diplomatic or worse talks to Lori. But on my list is Lori as numero uno, The vet, then Dale, then Andrea, then T-dog, then the kid.

I would really hope they bring back Morgan to shake things up a little. But since Lennie James doesn't have anything further with TWD on his IMDB page, that leaves that out.

And your list has to be Lori next. She is quintessentially the worst character ever.

    • DavidJackson8

I'd guess Lori's next on your list.

Reason: Andrea, Shane, and Lori is the order of my "pray for death" list.

    • FlorBlyth

Let's see, T-Dog and Dale.... in that order perhaps?
